Steer your career off the beaten track and become a field guide! You will spend an unforgettable time in the African bush, learning all about the wildlife, environment, how to conduct safaris both on game drives and trails, as well as mastering other essential skills along the way.

Set the foundation for your journey as an esteemed guide! Build a comprehensive understanding and practical expertise in animal behaviour interpretation, bird and plant identification, tracking, astronomy, 4×4 driving and guiding safaris in Big Five territory. All the while, embracing the ethics of a true conservationist.

Course Format and Duration:

Six-month course or one-year course with six-month internship/placement subject to meeting specific requirements and having correct documents in place. 

Note: There is an additional cost for the placement/internship over and above the course fee. 

The course includes:

  • NQF2 Nature Site Guide (FGASA)

  • FGASA Apprentice Trails Guide Mentorship Programme

  • Rifle competency (PFTC) & FGASA Advanced Rifle Handling

  • Tracks & Signs

  • Trailing

  • Wilderness First Aid Level 1 and 2

  • Birding (ID of birds and sounds)

  • Wildlife Photography

  • Navigation and Orientation

  • 4 x 4 Driving

  • Basic Mechanics

  • Principles of Reserve Management & Anti-Poaching

  • Hospitality in 5-star environment

  • Emotional Intelligence

Qualifying requirements:

  • 18 years and older for 6-month study course
  • 21 years and older to qualify for internship placement upon completion of course
  • Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) – South African or International (required for the internship)
  • Registration with the National Department of Tourism (NDT) would be to your advantage – possibility of which depends on a graduate’s visa type
  • Correct documents i.e. visa being in place
  • Internship is subject to meeting specific requirements

Work Experience

Kick-start your career with work experience at a high-end safari lodge.

We will assist interested graduates with securing work experience/placement – carefully choosing the right partners to match our graduates’ individual career profiles and connecting them with professional networks to establish their careers. 

6-Month Internship

The one-year course includes a six-month internship, with the guarantee of work experience/placement, subject to conditions.
